Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: white adj., mountain n.
Etymology: < white adj. + mountain n., after Spanish Sierra Blanca (a1541 as the name of a mountain peak in Central Mexico, 1850 or earlier as the name of a mountain peak in New Mexico, in both cases so called on account of being perpetually covered with snow); compare Spanish los Indios de la Sierra Blanca (1850 or earlier).
