Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: white adj., rust n.1
Etymology: < white adj. + rust n.1 In sense 1 originally after French †roüilleure blanche (1675 in the passage translated in quot. 1677). With sense 2 compare French rouille blanche (1692 or earlier in this sense), German weißer Rost (1701 or earlier in this sense).
1. A white coating or discoloration produced on the surface of various metals by exposure to moist air or other corrosive agents; esp. (in early use) a coating of white lead (basic lead carbonate) formed on the surface of lead; (now more usually) a powdery white coating of zinc oxide, hydroxide, and carbonate formed by corrosion of zinc or galvanized steel.In early quots., referring to the preparation of ceruse from lead plates soaked in vinegar.
