A respiratory disorder characterized by bouts of severe coughing, typically followed by a noisy, gasping intake of breath; spec. the highly infectious, often epidemic disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis, which most frequently affects children (= pertussis n.). In early use also: an instance or case of this.The sound associated with the intake of breath after coughing is commonly described as a whoop, but is highly variable.Earlier names for this disorder include chincough, kinkcough, and kinkhost.
