Origin: Probably a word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Probably cognate with Old Frisian hōr (West Frisian hoer ), Middle Dutch hoere (Dutch hoer ), Old High German huora (Middle High German huore , German Hure ), Middle Low German hōre , Old Icelandic hóra , Old Swedish, Swedish hora , Danish hore , all in the sense ‘prostitute, adulteress’ < the same Germanic base as Old Frisian hōr , Middle Dutch hoer , Old Saxon hōr- (in hōrhūs whorehouse; Middle Low German hōre ), Old High German huor (Middle High German huor , early modern German hur ), Old Icelandic hór , Old Swedish, Swedish hor , Old Danish, Danish hor , all in the sense ‘fornication, adultery’, and also Early Runic horaz (5th cent.), Old Icelandic hórr , Gothic hors , all in the sense ‘male fornicator’ < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin cārus dear (see caress n.), Early Irish carae friend, Welsh câr relative, friend (13th cent.), Latvian kārs greedy, hungry, eager, ultimately a suffixed form of the Indo-European base of Sanskrit kā- , Avestan kā- , both in the sense ‘to desire’. Compare ho n.7, hooer n., hoor n. Possible borrowing from early Scandinavian. In Old English the word is not attested until the 11th cent. Old English hōrdōm whoredom n. is also attested from the 11th cent., as are the nouns hōrcwene , apparently in the sense ‘whore, prostitute’ (compare quean n.) and hōring fornicator, adulterer (compare -ing suffix3); these latter two are only attested in texts associated with Wulfstan (in whose works Scandinavian loans are found in legal and quasi-legal use). It is unclear whether the first element in these words is to be interpreted as showing Old English hōre whore n. (semantically less likely for hōrcwene ) or an otherwise unattested noun of action *hōr sexual promiscuity, adultery, directly cognate with Old High German huor , Old Icelandic hór , etc. (see above) < the same Germanic base. Alternatively, hōrdōm and hōrcwene may have been borrowed < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic hórdómr , hórkona ), with substitution of -dom suffix and quean n. for the respective second elements (and with hōring formed within English < the first element of hōrcwene + -ing suffix3). Because of the relatively late attestation of whore n. in Old English, early Scandinavian origin has been suggested for it as well (compare Old Icelandic hóra and the cognate Scandinavian forms listed above). However, cognate forms are found in many West Germanic languages, and the late attestation in Old English could simply be due to register (i.e. the word may have been regarded as vulgar, and hence avoided in earlier written sources). In any case, the use of the word in Middle English was perhaps reinforced by Scandinavian. Form history. The present-day standard pronunciation /hɔː/ is the result of lowering of the reflex of Middle English close ō before r in later modern English (compare e.g. poor adj., moor n.1, boor n.). The pronunciation /hʊə/ (without lowering) was widespread in the 17th and 18th cent., but is now regional (compare hooer n., hoor n.). On the development of forms with wh see discussion at wh n. The word is sometimes (from the 17th cent. onwards) written with asterisks, dashes, etc., representing suppressed letters, so as to avoid the charge of obscenity, and is relatively uncommon in print during the 19th century. Specific senses. The precise sense (i.e. 1a or 1b) of early glossarial attestations has sometimes been disputed (compare quots. OE at sense 1a, c1175 at sense 1b); however, the assignment of quotations adopted here is supported by the context in the sources of the glosses. Quot. lOE at sense 1a is entirely unambiguous.
