Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi bastī.
Etymology: < Hindi bastī settlement, makeshift settlement, suburb, originally a modern vernacular pronunciation of Sanskrit vasati abode < vas- to dwell (see be v.).
In South Asia: a village or group of huts; a shanty town, a slum.Particularly associated with Calcutta.
