Etymology: < white adj. + wine n.1 Compare Middle Dutch witte wijn (Dutch witte wijn ), Old High German wīzwīn (in an isolated attestation, glossing classical Latin Amīnēum anime n.2; German Weißwein subsequently from the late 14th cent.). Compare also classical Latin vīnum album , Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French vin blanc (13th cent. in Old French), Spanish vino blanco (1316), Italian vino bianco (1308). Compare red wine n.
Any yellowish-coloured wine, typically made by fermenting the juice of white grapes or select varieties of white-fleshed dark grape. Also: a type or serving of this. Cf. red wine n.White wines vary in colour from almost colourless to deep amber, and also vary greatly in the degree of sweetness that they show. Styles include sparkling wines such as champagne, and fortified whites such as sherry and Madeira.In quot. OE rendering classical Latin Amīnēum in its post-classical sense ‘white wine’ (see anime n.2).
