white-clawed crayfish n. [after French écrevisse pieds-blancs (1869 in the source referred to in quot. 1880, or earlier)] a small freshwater crayfish native to Europe, Austropotamobius pallipes, which is olive brown with pale claws.Now endangered throughout much of its range, often because of competition with and disease acquired from species of crayfish introduced from America.
