Etymology: Probably < a first element representing a regional or colloquial pronunciation of whirly- comb. form + a second element of uncertain origin (perhaps related to waff n.; compare waff n. 2). Compare slightly earlier willy n.³ Perhaps compare waw n.¹ (although this was apparently no longer current in the 19th cent.).
