1. A designated area where taxicabs or (formerly) taxi carriages line up to wait for business; = taxi rank n.Cab ranks are often located at busy locations such as airports, train stations, etc., and usually operate on a first come, first served system in which the taxi at the front of the line serves the first customer, the remaining taxis moving ahead as each taxi departs.Cab stand is the more usual term in North American use.

2. In extended use.
a. English Law. A rule or system by which a barrister is obliged to accept instructions to act on behalf of a client, provided that he or she is qualified to do so and is not otherwise engaged. Chiefly as a modifier, in cab rank rule, cab rank principle. Cf. taxi rank n. 2.
