Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin adminiculum.
Etymology: < classical Latin adminiculum prop, support (see adminicle n.), in scientific Latin also accessory organ of a plant used for support, defence, etc. ( G. A. Scopoli Fundamenta botanica (1783) 20). Compare French adminicule support of a plant (1611 in Cotgrave).

a. Entomology. Originally: each of a number of minute spines or processes on the abdominal surface of certain subterranean insect pupae, used in locomotion (usually in plural; now rare). Later also: an unpaired accessory sclerite in the genitalia of certain male flies.

1840 J. Duncan Introd. Entomol. (Naturalist's Libr.: Entomol. I) 91 When the segments are curved, the convex side, by means of these spines (called adminicula by Kirby), finds a point d' appui higher up than it occupied formerly.

Wales 86 102 Adminicula, new term (sing. adminiculum), a pair of subvertical plates that may occur in the apical region of the ventral and sometimes also the dorsal valves, especially in very rostrate shells, extending from the inner tip of the umbo to the floor of the valve, and apparently to buttress the arch of the valve.

2. Botany. Any accessory organ of a plant which serves to defend, strengthen, or support, such as a tendril, bract, stipule, etc. Cf. fulcrum n. 2a. Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
