Etymology: perhaps < ca, ka jackdaw (Scots kae n.1) + daw n. (The Irish cudhóg, Gaelic cathag, Manx caaig jackdaw can hardly be connected.)Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈcaddow.

Etymology: Compare caddis n.1 3b; also Gaelic cudadh, cudath tartan (not Irish—O'Reilly); but it is doubtful whether this is from English or the converse. The Manx cadee, and the Irish cadas cotton, can hardly be related.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈcaddow.
Obsolete or dialect.
