Etymology: < Anglo-Norman amenuser, ameneuser, amenucer, amenusser, enmenuser, Anglo-Norman and Middle French amenusier, amenuiser, Middle French admeniser (12th cent. in Old French) < a- a- prefix5 + menuser , menuiser to lessen (see minish v.). The β. forms show assimilation of the ending to -ish suffix2; compare minish v., diminish v.With forms in ad- in French and English compare ad- prefix. With forms in en- in French and English compare en- prefix1.
