单词 winter crack
释义

winter crackn.

Brit. /ˈwɪntə krak/, U.S. /ˈwɪn(t)ər ˌkræk/
Forms:

α. 1600s– winter creke.

β. 1700s– winter crack.

Origin: A borrowing from Dutch, combined with an English element. Etymons: winter n.1, Dutch kriek.
Etymology: < winter n.1 + Dutch kriek kind of plum (2nd half of the 14th cent. in Middle Dutch as crieke; also in sense ‘cherry’), cognate with Middle Low German krēke, kreike, a kind of plum, Old High German krih-, krieh- (in krihboum, kriehboum plum tree, cherry tree; Middle High German kriehe damson, bullace, German Krieche damson, bullace), Old Swedish krikon (Swedish krikon damson, bullace), Danish kræge damson, bullace, of uncertain origin.Dutch kriek is usually been derived from post-classical Latin graecum , denoting a small plum, short for prunum Graecum , lit. Greek plum (see Greek adj.), although this is apparently not attested before 1517. Compare also Anglo-Norman creke bullace (c1250) and Old French creque bullace, sloe (end of the 12th cent.; Middle French creque , French crèque sloe). The β. forms appear to show remodelling of the second element by folk-etymological association with crack v. or crack n. (compare quot. 1898 and quot. 1908 at cracks n.).
Now historical and rare.
Any of various late-ripening plums; esp. a damson or bullace ( Prunus domestica insititia). Cf. cracks n.
