单词 winter-ground
释义

winter-groundv.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: winter n.1, ground n.; winter n.1, ground v.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < winter n.1 + ground n., or perhaps < winter n.1 + ground v.The interpretation of quot. a1616 has been much disputed. (For coarse in this passage see corse n. and compare corpse n.) Theobald ( Wks. Shakespeare (1733) VI. 426) proposed an amended reading winter-gown , meaning ‘to serve as a winter gown for’ (compare gown v.), which was adopted by some 18th- and 19th-cent. editors. It has also been suggested that, since the speech at this point in the text is interrupted, winter-ground here may be a compound noun rather than a verb; perhaps compare e.g.:1642 C. Vermuyden Disc. Drayning Great Fennes 6 The Kings contract is to make these Lands Winter ground, that is to free them from the overflowing of the Rivers aforesaid. For a recent discussion of alternative interpretations of this passage, see the New Oxford Shakespeare: Critical Reference Edition (2017).
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
transitive. To provide or serve as a protective winter covering for (something).Found only (debatably) in quot. a1616, and in reference to this. See discussion in etymology section.
