单词 winterbourne
释义

winterbournen.

Brit. /ˈwɪntəbɔːn/, U.S. /ˈwɪn(t)ərˌbɔrn/
Forms: see winter n.1 and bourn n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: winter n.1, bourn n.1
Etymology: < winter n.1 + bourn n.1The word occurs commonly in boundary markers in Anglo-Saxon charters, sometimes in apparent lexical use, but also as a name of rivers and streams and of settlements associated with them. In early instances it can be difficult to determine whether the attestation is lexical or shows a place name. Compare further discussion in E. Ekwall Eng. River-names (1928) 463–4, M. Gelling & A. Cole Landscape of Place-names (2000) 11. Current settlement names derived from this word are common (in the forms Winterborne , Winterbourne ) in Dorset (at least eleven instances, situated along the River Winterborne ), and Wiltshire (six instances, along the River Bourne (972 (in a 13th-cent. copy) as Winterburnan ), and instances also occur in Gloucestershire, Berkshire, and Kent. It is possible that use of the present word in the modern period partly reflects currency of the place names; compare similarly gipsies n., eylebourn n.
An intermittent stream which flows only in winter or at long intervals, typically found in chalk and limestone districts. Cf. eylebourn n.
