Etymology: < winter n.¹ + bourn n.¹The word occurs commonly in boundary markers in Anglo-Saxon charters, sometimes in apparent lexical use, but also as a name of rivers and streams and of settlements associated with them. Current settlement names derived from this word are common (in the forms Winterborne , Winterbourne ) in Dorset (at least eleven instances, situated along the River Winterborne ), and Wiltshire (six instances, along the River Bourne (972 (in a 13th-cent. copy) as Winterburnan ), and instances also occur in Gloucestershire, Berkshire, and Kent. It is possible that use of the present word in the modern period partly reflects currency of the place names; compare similarly gipsies n., eylebourn n.
