Chemistry.

Either of two isomeric hydrocarbons of the alkene series, gaseous at room temperature, with general formula C₄H₆; esp. 1,3-butadiene, used as a monomer in the production of synthetic rubbers; (also) any substituted derivative of these alkenes.1,3-butadiene is CH₂=CHCH=CH₂; 1,2-butadiene is CH₂=C=CHCH₃. The presence of two adjacent double bonds in 1,2-butadiene makes it very unstable, and of little use synthetically.
