1. A small (typically thin) piece or fragment of wood (cf. chip n.2 1a). Frequently in plural or as a mass noun: such fragments collectively used as a material, for fuel, or for various purposes such as for surfacing or as a horticultural mulch (cf. chip n.2 4a). Frequently as a modifier.
