Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps compare toggle n. Apparently coined by William (‘Bill’) Shankley (1901–78), English scoutmaster, who invented the ring while working at Gilwell Park Scout Camp, Epping Forest, in the early 1920s. Compare slightly later boondoggle n.
A loop or ring of leather, cord, etc., through which the ends of a Scout's neckerchief are threaded.
