1853 Chem. Gaz. 1 Dec. 442 It appears very probable that its composition is to be expressed by the formula C⁴⁰H⁴⁰O⁴. For this new acid the author [sc. Heintz] proposes the name of butic acid.

1867 C. L. Bloxam Chemistry 582 Butter..contains also butine, which yields glycerine and butic acid (HO.C₄₀H₃₉O₃) when saponified.
