Etymology: In α. forms cognate with or formed similarly to Dutch wereldman politician (1719, rare), person with knowledge of the world (1903), Old High German weraltman worldly or secular person (Middle High German werltman person living in the world, worldly person) < the Germanic base of world n. + the Germanic base of man n.1 In β. forms < the genitive of world n. + man n.1; compare Old Icelandic veraldar maðr man of this world, layman, Old Swedish värulds man person living in the world, person of status, Old Danish værilz man layman (compare Danish verdensmand person with knowledge of the world). With sense 2 compare man of the world n.
