Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Spanish calamar; Italian calamaro.
Etymology: < Spanish calamar (1495; plural calamares ) and its etymon Italian calamaro (a1577; plural calamari ), originally regional variant of calamaio (early 14th cent. as calamaia in this sense) < post-classical Latin calamarius (see calamary n.).The wide variety of forms reflects multiple borrowing < Italian, Spanish, and modern Greek καλαμάρι (plural καλαμάρια). The form calamaries is formally a double plural.
With plural agreement: squid as an ingredient in (esp. Mediterranean) cookery. Also with singular agreement: a dish of squid.
