Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: yea adv.; yeah adv.; German ja; Dutch ja.
Etymology: In early (chiefly U.S.) use partly representing a regional or colloquial pronunciation of yea adv., and partly < German ja and its cognate Dutch ja (see yea adv. and compare yaw adv.). In later British use representing a regional (chiefly northern and north midland), affected, or (specifically English) upper-class and upper-middle-class pronunciation of yea adv. or yeah adv. Compare earlier yaw adv.
