Primary stress is generally retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. Anglomane n.
Forms: 1700s -man, 1800s– -mane.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French -mane.
Etymology: < French -mane < ancient Greek -μανής , adjectival form corresponding to, and somewhat more common than, the form used in abstract nouns, -μανία -mania comb. form.Compare the much more common -maniac comb. form. French -mane is the usual termination for nouns and adjectives corresponding with nouns in -manie , whereas -maniaque is relatively uncommon. This element is found in a small number of nouns recorded from the late 18th cent. onwards. Most are borrowings < French or are formed after French models, the earliest being Anglomane n. and Galloman n. at Gallo- comb. form1 2b.
Forming nouns with the sense ‘a person who has a mania for (what is denoted by the first element of the compound)’.
