Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French à contre-cœur.
Etymology: < French à contre-cœur against one's will, reluctantly (1579 in Middle French; earlier in e.g. avoir a contrecuer to dislike (c1393)) < à for, with + contre-cœur aversion (second half of the 12th cent. in Old French in e.g. avoir contrecœur to dislike, estre contre coer a to be adverse to; < contre against (see counter prep.) + cœur heart: see cœur n.).
Against one's will; reluctantly.
