单词 butter tooth
释义

butter toothn.

Brit. /ˈbʌtə tuːθ/, U.S. /ˈbədər ˌtuθ/
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: butter n.1, tooth n.
Etymology: Apparently < butter n.1 + tooth n., although the original motivation for the name is unclear. Compare Dutch botertand front tooth, (in later use) either of the two upper front teeth, especially when large and wide (1599). The direction of any influence is unclear. The name perhaps arose from a supposed leading role for these teeth in tasting food. Perhaps compare Dutch lekkertand tooth that relishes good food, person who relishes good food, gourmand (16th cent.), and compare also sweet tooth n. at sweet adj. and adv. Compounds 1a.
Now chiefly U.S.
Originally: an incisor (front) tooth, esp. when large or prominent (now historical and rare). In later use also (in plural): teeth that are yellowish or uncared-for.
