Origin: Formed within English, by conversion. Etymons: English wreþen , writhe v.
Etymology: < wreþen, past participle of writhe v. (compare Forms 3aβ, and see discussion, at that entry). Compare earlier writhen adj.The Middle English prefixed form iwrethe could alternatively reflect the past participle of iwrithe (see writhe v.). N.E.D. (1928) gives the pronunciation as (rīð'n) /riːð(ə)n/.
