Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch ghedrāghen to carry, to contain, to bear (offspring, fruit), to endure, suffer, to reach (Dutch gedragen , now chiefly (reflexive) ‘to behave’), Old Saxon gidragan to carry, bring, to produce, to bear (offspring) (Middle Low German gedrāgen , gedrēgen , also ‘to wear, to endure, suffer’), Old High German gitragan to carry, bring, to endure, suffer, to gather together, (reflexive) to behave (Middle High German getragen , also ‘to wear’, German †getragen , also ‘to bear (offspring)’), Gothic gadragan to pile up, heap together < the Germanic base of y- prefix + the Germanic base of draw v.In Old English a strong verb of Class VI.
Obsolete.
1. transitive. To sweep (something) with the hem of a garment.
