Etymology: Old English *gíegan, *gégan = West Frisian geije to cry out, Old Norse geyja to bark, to blaspheme < *gaujan, < *gau (compare Old Norse -gá barking, blasphemy, as in guðgá). Probably related forms with -t- suffix are Dutch guiten to bark, scold, German dialect gauzen, gäuzen to yelp, scold, Old Norse gaunta to boast, prate.
