单词 yekke
释义

Yekkeadj.n.

Brit. /ˈjɛkə/, U.S. /ˈjɛkə/, /ˈjɛki/
Inflections: Plural yekkes, yekim Brit. /ˈjɛkɪm/, U.S. /ˈjɛkɪm/.
Forms: 1900s– Yecke, 1900s– Yekke, 1900s– Yekkie (U.S.). Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Hebrew. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from Yiddish. Etymons: Hebrew yeke; Yiddish yeke.
Etymology: < either (i) modern Hebrew yeke or perhaps its etymon (ii) Yiddish yeke, further etymology uncertain and disputed.Further etymology. There are many suggestions for the etymology of the Yiddish word, most of them clearly folk-etymological. One suggestion derives it < German regional (Rhineland) Jeck , Jecke fool (also in extended self-deprecating use ‘human being’), regional variant of Geck (see geck n.1). The widely circulated suggestion that it is < German Jacke coat, jacket (see jack n.1), with reference to the shorter jackets worn by Jewish people of Western European, e.g. German, origin, whereas the coats worn by Eastern European Jews were typically longer, poses formal problems and is unconvincing (as likewise is the similar explanation offered in quot. 1950 at sense B.); similarly unconvincing is a derivation < a pet form of the male forename Jacob (see Jacob n.). Specific forms. The form Yekkie probably reflects an irregular spelling in English rather than any influence of -y suffix6. In plural form yekim after the modern Hebrew plural form.
slang (often mildly depreciative).
