Origin: Probably either (i) a borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Or perhaps (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item; modelled on a Scottish Gaelic lexical item. Etymons: Scottish Gaelic iolach ; yell n.
Etymology: Probably either < Scottish Gaelic iolach shout, clamour (see below), in some forms perhaps influenced by yell n., or an alteration of yell n. after Scottish Gaelic iolach (Early Irish ilach, ulach shout, especially of joy), further etymology unknown (compare Welsh elwch rejoicing, jubilation, perhaps < Early Irish).
