Origin: A borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic caibe.
Etymology: < Scottish Gaelic caibe spade, mattock, turf-cutter (especially the metal component; compare Irish †coibe spade), apparently related to Old Welsh cep spade, mattock (Welsh caib pickaxe, mattock, hoe, ploughshare), further etymology unknown. Perhaps compare earlier kibble n.1The final syllable is probably influenced by -y suffix6.
