Etymology: < Middle French, French à la mort desperate (c1341 in estre à la mort ), to (the) death (1500 in battre jusqu'à la mort to beat (someone) to death) < à la à la prep. + mort mort n.1 Compare all amort adj. and see discussion at that entry. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ælămǭ·ɹt, French alamō·r) /æləˈmɔːt/, French /a la mɔːr/, indicating replacement of the early assimilated form by the incompletely assimilated modern French form.
