单词 yperite
释义

yperiten.

Brit. /ˈiːpərʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈipəˌraɪt/
Forms: 1900s– yperit (rare), 1900s– yperite, 1900s– yprite. Also with capital initial.
Origin: Partly a borrowing from German. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: German Yperit; French ypérite, yprite.
Etymology: Apparently originally < German Yperit (1917) < either Yper or Ypern , the names in Dutch regional (West Flanders) and German respectively of Ypres , the town in West Flanders, Belgium, near which mustard gas was first used against Allied troops on 12–13 July 1917 (see Wipers n.) + -it -ite suffix1, with remodelling of the ending after -ite suffix1. In later use probably partly also < French ypérite (1918 or earlier), yprite (1919 or earlier), itself probably originally a borrowing of the English word or its German etymon. Compare Italian yprite (1918 or earlier), iprite (1920 or earlier, now the usual form).
