Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Partly also a borrowing from French. Etymons: Spanish yeso, yesso; French yesso.
Etymology: < Spanish yeso, †yesso gypsum (13th cent.) < classical Latin gypsum gypsum n., in quot. a1533 via Middle French yesso (1531 in the passage translated).
rare before 19th cent.
1. A type of plaster composed of ground gypsum, typically used in sculpture or for whitewashing walls. Also in figurative contexts. Cf. gesso n. 1. Chiefly U.S. (south-western) in later use.
