Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: yester-even adv.
Etymology: Scots variant of yester-even adv. With the elision of the middle syllable compare the α. forms at yester-even adv. and n. and also the α. forms at yester-eve adv. This syllable is later sometimes reinstated (compare the forms yestere'en and yestereen), probably by analogy with yesterday adv., yester- comb. form, etc. In β. forms with reinterpretation of the first letters as showing the definite article the adj. (compare the adj. 2b) or, with this strene, the demonstrative determiner this pron. (compare this adj. 1). The second element shows regular loss of intervocalic v in Scots; compare forms at even n.1
Chiefly Scottish and poetic.
