Etymology: < butter n.1 + bur n. Probably so called because its large leaves were used for wrapping butter; compare butterdock n. at butter n.1 Compounds 4 and butter leaves n. at butter n.1 Compounds 4.
1. Any of several perennial plants of the genus Petasites (family Asteraceae) which are found in wet regions of Eurasia and North America, and have spikes of pale purple or white flowers, thick rhizomes, and large soft leaves; esp. the common P. vulgaris. Also with distinguishing word. Cf. petasites n.Butterburs contain toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids which are typically removed before the plants are used medicinally or as a source of food.
