Etymology: < Japanese yokozuna rope awarded to the top wrestler in sumo (18th cent.), highest grade of sumo wrestler (1890) < yoko side, (when used attributively) horizontal + -zuna, combining form of tsuna rope.The forms yokotsuna and yokodzuna reflect earlier pronunciations of the Japanese word.

The highest grade of champion, ranking immediately above ozeki; a wrestler who has attained this grade. Also: the rope or belt worn around the waist of such a wrestler.
