Etymology: Imitative. Compare earlier yelp n. 2, yelp v. 3, and yawp v. 1.In quot. 1582 as part of a reduplicated form yolp-yalpe (with vowel variation).
Representing a harsh, high-pitched bark or cry characteristic of dogs and some other animals. Also as n.: a cry of this sort; a yelp. Cf. yelp n. II., yelp v. 3, yawp v.Apparently unattested between the early 17th and 20th centuries.
