Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew yōm kippūr.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew yōm kippūr (Mishnah) < biblical Hebrew yōm day + post-biblical Hebrew kippūr atonement (in biblical usage only in plural kippūrīm ; < kipper to atone, to expiate). Compare the earlier calque Day of Atonement n. at day n. Phrases 6a(a).In the Old Testament and Hebrew Scriptures, the feast day is called yōm kippūrīm (also yōm hakkippūrīm , with prefixed article in the second element; Leviticus 23:27-8, 25:9). The form Yom Kipper and pronunciations with stress on the first syllable of the second element reflect an Ashkenazic pronunciation of the Hebrew word.
The annual Jewish day of repentance and expiation (concluding the Ten Days of Repentance which begin with Rosh Hashanah), observed on the tenth day of the month of Tishri and marked by prayer and fasting. Also called Day of Atonement.Generally considered to be the most important day of the Jewish religious calendar.
