Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin zelosus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin zelosus ardent, fervent (5th or 6th cent. designating an emotion, 7th cent. designating a group of people) < classical Latin zēlus zeal n. + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare earlier jealous adj. and the Romance forms cited at that entry.Specific senses. In sense 3 after jealous adj. Specific forms. With the form zelose at α. forms compare -ose suffix1. The β. forms reflect assimilation to zeal n.
