Etymology: < butter n.1 + wort n.1, probably so called on account of the greasy or glistening appearance of its leaves.Compare post-classical Latin pinguicula and early modern German smalzchrawt and the discussion of the motivation for these names at Pinguicula n.
Any of the insectivorous plants constituting the genus Pinguicula (family Lentibulariaceae), typically found in boggy places and having yellowish-green greasy leaves and white or purple flowers on slender stems; esp. the common P. vulgaris. Also with distinguishing word. Cf. Pinguicula n.pale butterwort: see the first element.
