Origin: A borrowing from Welsh. Etymons: Welsh afanc, afangc, addanc.
Etymology: < Welsh afanc, †afangc (also †addanc) aquatic monster, beaver (14th cent.) < the same Celtic base (with a velar suffix) as Welsh afon , Middle Breton, Breton aven , Early Irish ab (n -stem), all in sense ‘river’ < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin amnis river (see amnic adj.1). Compare Breton avank beaver, and perhaps also Old Breton abac dwarf, sea monster (in a Latinized form abacus), Early Irish abacc dwarf.
In Welsh mythology: an aquatic monster. Also: an otter or beaver identified as such a monster.
