Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: a- prefix1, feign v.
Etymology: Apparently < a- prefix1 (see discussion of later uses at that entry) + feign v. (compare forms at that entry). Perhaps compare classical Latin affingere (see affictitious adj.) in its specific sense developments ‘to embellish, to make false additions (to a report or rumour)’, ‘to attribute (something) more or less unsuitably (to a person)’, ‘to simulate, counterfeit (a letter)’.
