Brit. /əˌfɛː də ˈkəː/, U.S. /əˌfɛr də ˈkər/
Inflections: Plural affaires de cœur.
Forms:

α. 1700s– affaire de cœur.

β. 1800s– affaire du cœur.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French affaire de cœur.
Etymology: < French affaire de cœur (1678 or earlier) < affaire affair n. + de de prep. + cœur heart (see cœur n.). Compare earlier affair of the heart n. at affair n. Phrases 2. The β. and δ. forms show substitution (within English) of French du ‘of the’ for de de prep.; French affaire du cœur is only attested in the sense ‘emotional (as opposed to intellectual) matter’ (frequently from 1619 or earlier). The γ. and δ. forms show substitution of affair n. for French affaire. Not fully naturalized in English. In plural form affaires de cœur after the French plural form.
A romantic relationship between two people; a love affair; spec. one in which one or both partners are also involved in a relationship with someone else; = affair n. 3a(a). Also: a matter concerning love (frequently in plural). Cf. affair of the heart n. at affair n. Phrases 2.
