单词 bycocket
释义

bycocketn.

Forms: Also Middle English–1500s byekoket, bycokett, bicokett, 1500s–1800s bycoket; also 1500s abococket, abococked, abococke, 1600s abacoc, 1600s–1800s abacot.
Etymology: < Old French bicoquet, bicocquet, biquoquet, cap, casque, head-dress, ‘capuce, casaque à capuchon; habituellement, coiffure militaire; quelquefois parure de femme, chaperon’ (Godefroy); diminutive of French bicoque = Italian bicocca little castle on a hill, Spanish bicoca a lookout; probably the original meaning, as in the diminutives and derivatives, was some kind of cap, whence transferred to a structure, topping or ‘crowning’ a height. Apparently < bi- twice + cocca as in cocca del capo ‘crown of the head’ (Florio). Compare also Spanish bicoquin a cap with two peaks, bicoquete a peasant's cap, Piedmontese bicochin a priest's cap (Diez). Compare abacot n.
Obsolete.
A kind of cap or headdress (peaked before and behind): (a) as a military headdress, a casque; (b) as an ornamental cap or headdress, worn by men and women. The two crowns [? of England and France] with which the bycocket of Henry VI was ‘garnished’ or ‘embroidered’, were, of course, no part of the ordinary bycocket.
