单词 buzzard
释义

buzzardn.1

Brit. /ˈbʌzəd/, U.S. /ˈbəzərd/
Forms: Middle English busard, Middle English–1500s bosarde, Middle English bosard, buserde, ( busherde), busserd, Middle English–1600s bussard, 1500s busarde, bussarde, ( bousarde, basert), buzarde, buzzarde, 1500s–1600s buzard, 1600s busard, 1600s– buzzard, (Scottish1500s bissart, 1700s bizzard, 1800s buzzart, dialect buzzert).
Etymology: < Old French busart = Provençal buzart; compare the synonymous Provençal buzac, Italian bozzago, -agro, abuzzago, French buse (16th cent. in Littré). The mutual relation of these words is unknown; they are commonly assumed to be derived < Latin buteōn-em of same meaning, but the process of formation is not evident.
1.
a. Name for the genus Buteo of birds of the falcon family, esp. B. vulgaris. Applied also, with defining words, to other birds belonging to the Falconidæ: as bald buzzard n. the Osprey, Pandion haliaëtus. moor buzzard n. Circus æruginosus.honey buzzard: see first element. The buzzard was an inferior kind of hawk, useless for falconry; hence apparently sense 2a. Cf. French buse buzzard, also ‘sot, ignorant, stupide’, Boiste; ‘imbecille’ Littré. (The chronology appears to make it impossible to connect this sense with the next word.)
