单词 byspel
释义

byspelbispeln.

Forms: Also 1800s Scottish and northern byspale.
Etymology: Middle English bispell, Old English ˈbíspell, ˈbígspell, < , bi- prefix + spell n.1 tale, story, narration; cognate with Middle High German bîspel, bîspil ‘instance, example’, Middle Dutch bîspel, byspel (Kilian). As in other nominal compounds, the prefix had the strong accented form, and appears to retain the sound of by/baɪ/ in the dialects in which the word lingers; but it was perhaps shortened to /ˈbɪspɛl/ in Middle English.
