a. (a) A hairy mammal of the South American suborder Vermilingua (superorder Xenarthra, families Myrmecophagidae and Cyclopedidae), as the giant anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla; (b) (in full scaly anteater) the pangolin (genus Manis) of parts of Asia and Africa; (c) (in full Cape anteater) the aardvark, Orycteropus afer. Also figurative.
