Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Adonista.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Adonista (1695 or earlier) < Adon- (in Adonai Adonai n.) + -ista -ist suffix. Compare Jehovist n.
Judaism. Now rare.
A person who maintains that the vowel points given to the Tetragrammaton YHWH in the Hebrew Scriptures indicate that it should be substituted by the name ‘Adonai’ (Adonai n.) in reading. Opposed to Jehovist n. 1.

1753 Chambers's Cycl. Suppl. at Adonai We find great disputes in authors, concerning the use and acceptation of the word Adonai; particularly, whether it is always read for the word Jehovah. This has given rise to two opposite sects among Hebraists, called Adonists and Jehovists.
