Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian cane corso.
Etymology: < Italian cane corso (a1527) < cane dog (late 12th cent.; < classical Latin canis : see Canis n.) + corso Corsican (14th cent.; < classical Latin Corsus Corsican: see Corsican n.).
A large and athletic breed of mastiff developed in Italy; a dog of this breed.rare before late 20th cent.

1834 Penny Mag. 14 June 230 The cane Corso, or Corsican bull-dog, much prized by the modern Italians as a house-dog, on account of its strength, boldness and ferocity.
1993 Dog World Feb. 134/3 (advt.) Cane Corso. Purebred, though not AKC registerable. Native to Italy. Rare, intelligent, athletic, sound temperament.
2007 New Yorker 6 Aug. 25/1 Ross used to breed ‘Rotts’—Rottweilers. Now he prefers Cane Corsos.
